| The armed insurgency shatters the livelihoods of people dependent on the land, disrupting harvests and affecting national and household food security. The civil war has restricted the access of a significant proportion of the population to their land. Over 800,000 displaced persons are located throughout the country, many in Burundi's northern provinces experienced one of the worst droughts in its history. As an overall result, a significant percentage of the population continue to be - in year 2001 - highly dependent on external food assistance. |
