With this project, CARE Guatemala aims to reduce the adverse impacts caused by flooding related to Hurricane Stan in the poor communities of Solola, San Marcos, Huehuetenango, Quiche and Totonicapan Departments. This will be achieved through provision of shelter, water, food, psycho-social assistance, income generation activities and through a well-planned process for resettlement of the displaced populations.
Hundreds of thousands of people have been affected by the disaster, and approximately 140,000 people have been displaced from their homes. In many of these cases, their homes have been completely destroyed in the floods and landslides. For many others, their homes and basic infrastructure have been severely damaged. In summary, the displaced can be categorized according to people sheltered in communal shelters who have lost their homes and do not have a place to return to; people sheltered in common shelters who have been displaced, but with support will be able to return and repair their houses - some of which is beginning already; displaced people who have lost their shelter, but remain at the site of their home due to cultural and spiritual beliefs and require support for basic needs; and people who have been displaced and are being sheltered by host families. While the strategies for reaching these groups will vary, all groups have basic food, water and sanitation, basic shelter and NFI’s and health support needs as the current situation is well below SPHERE standards. |
