| Project Name: | Women, Health and HIV/AIDS Prevention |
| Project Description: |
The Women, Health and HIV/AIDS Prevention Program, will build upon HOGASA (Community-Based Health Services), a project that is part of the Title II Food Security Program (2001-2006) located in the three departments that have the highest level of poverty in Honduras (Intibuca, Lempira and La Paz). The HOGASA project's objective is to improve the access and availability of health services and nutritional conditions that in particular impact women and children, emphasizing increased awareness, positive attitude and improved practices.
During August and September 2006 the project prepared a Situation Analysis of the HIV/AIDS care and prevention Services available in the departments covered by HOGASA with the aim of identifying areas of intervention in which CARE might strengthen at institutional or community level in the three departments of the coverage. A result of this diagnosis is that there are opportunities for addressing the subject of HIV/AIDS in this region. They include: attention to women who are pregnant and of childbearing age for the reduction of vertical Transmission of HIV/AIDS; preventive education activities within the young (economically active) population; sensitization in the community for the reduction of the stigma and discrimination relating to HIV/AIDS; raising awareness toward local governments and organized civil society for the perception of HIV/AIDS as a serious problem within the society; and strengthening of the Health care services for promotion of VCT (Voluntary Counseling and Testing).Based on these opportunities, the funding will be used to develop a mini pilot project in the Department of Intibuca¡ in order to work the HIV/AIDS component during a period of 8 months, stressing the subjects of Prevention, Attention, and Support. |
