Project Information

Project Name:Integrated Program for Vulnerable Children
Project Description:
Building on our achievements, research and lessons learned, CARE seeks to expand our partnership with Cargill to further efforts to reduce childhood vulnerability in Central America. The proposed three-year Integrated Project for Vulnerable Children will take a cross-cutting approach that will include improving the quality of education, promoting better child nutrition, strengthening the livelihoods of parents, raising awareness and encouraging sound public policy and corporate social responsibility, as described in greater detail in the next sections. The project will launch direct education, nutrition and livelihood interventions in Guatemala and Honduras, while our advocacy efforts will span El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.

The project is designed to involve strong participation from communities, local governments and organizations. At the start, CARE will ask communities themselves to articulate their goals for the future. In addition to being part of the planning process, they will also analyze and share project results and suggest changes, if necessary. Additionally, community volunteers will be trained to monitor and report on education and nutrition activities.
Local governments will also play a key role in the project. Education authorities will work with CARE to incorporate project activities into school curriculum, and expenditures on school improvements will be jointly managed by CARE and officials. Throughout the project, CARE will work to improve the capacity of local governments to sustain quality education and health services.
Thirdly, community organizations will work in partnership with CARE to lead project activities. This local involvement is critical to the project's success and sustainability, as these actors will be responsible for continuing to push forward once CARE's role ends.
