| Project Name: | Indlala Response Program |
| Project Description: |
On March 15th, “Indlalaâ€, rated a category 3/5 cyclone on the Saffir Simpson scale, struck the northeast coast of Madagascar and began unleashing gusts of up to 230 kilometers per hour and heavy rainfall on the District of Antalaha. According to initial meteorological reports, the cyclone lost some wind speed as it moved southwest through the Districts of Maroansetra and into Andilamena, but continued to dump torrential, often flooding rains. Although still too early to quantify, the damage is expected to be significant, with two districts where CARE is present affected by the severe weather.
While not yet quantified, the cyclone has caused extensive damage to houses, road and social infrastructure, and agricultural crops, and some deaths in the northeast. In the district capital itself, communication and radio is down, electricity and water are out, and severe infrastructure damage was reported, including damage to the airports. Antalaha and Maroansetra offices and vehicles have sustained serious damage as well.
As an immediate response measure CARE will:
•Conduct impact assessments (determine the zones and numbers of persons affected, followed by more detailed assessments of the potential damage to livelihoods—damage to household assets, agricultural crops, and to road and social infrastructure, etc)
•Distribute emergency relief items to the most affected persons. These items generally include: plastic sheeting, water purification solution (Sur’Eau) and jerrycans,
•Open up road access to the affected zone where it has been cut off, to ensure the rapid distribution of relief items. |
