Project Information

Project Name:Community-Based Preparedness Strategy
Project Description:
Supporting the government in its efforts to adopt a more planned approach to disaster management, CARE Mozambique decided to integrate Emergency Preparedness within its overall programming.

Like the majority of its national and international partners, CARE recognizes that Mozambique is a very vulnerable country, subject to regular disasters of all sorts that could be alleviated through a carefully planned and implemented series of preventive measures.
In addition, this project will strengthen the Government of Mozambique, local communities, and CARE's skills in their abilities and capacities to better prepare for and respond to any kind of emergency.
By doing all the above, CARE is confident that many lives and livelihood assets will be saved.

Objectives:

Short term objectives:

1. Strengthen CARE Mozambique skills and capacities and be better prepared for future potential emergencies
2. Be able to intervene quicker and in a more efficient manner during the next emergencies
3. Review and develop strategies to involve communities and local stakeholders in the preparedness process

Medium and long term objectives:

1. Reduce the cost of the emergency programs through better preparedness.
2. Reduce the vulnerability of the population (with special emphasis on women) through community-based training, awareness, and education. The programs should be designed in cooperation with communities.
3. Strengthen the capacities and skills of our partners (local communities, local government, local institutions) at the community level in selected emergency areas.
4. Strengthen the effectiveness of our normal long-term development programs by incorporating disaster preparedness strategies into project design. Household level indicators may include preparedness activities and plans.
5. Improve and increase our local ability to raise funds for emergencies with potential donors, internally and externally.
