Project Information

Project Name:Malaria Prevention for Children and their Mothers (MPC)
Project Description:
This goal of this CIDA-funded, eight-month project is to reduce the impact of food shortages in Mozambique
by reducing malaria related mortality. CARE specifically focuses on reducing the impact of malaria by improving
communities' access to preventive measures and early treatment in northern Inhambane province. It is a part of a
larger emergency response program to improve the health status of women and children through community based
interventions (food distributions, nutrition education, hygiene and sanitation education, Vitamin A supplements). The planned outcome is that 40,000 children under five and pregnant women use insecticide treated bed nets and that
malaria episodes are treated promptly and correctly. Expected results are: 1) decreased incidence of low birth
weight and stillbirths; and 2) reduced malaria case fatality rate at local health centers.
