The project have in two components as described below.
Component A) Supplementary Feeding - Objective: To reduce mortality and morbidity due to malnutrition amongst children and women in the drought affected areas.Strategies: Blanket supplementary feeding of children 6-60 months,pregnant and lactating women in Funhalouro and Mabote districts to provide an extra 400 kcal/beneficiary/day through monthly distributions; promotion of better care and hygiene practices; supplementation with vitamin A of all children 6-60 months; de-worming of all children 12-60 months; and, active referral of children with severe malnutrition towards therapeutic feeding centres.Activities include: Census of potential beneficiaries in two districts, covering the entire districts and providing data to be used by other organizations involved in emergency response interventions; training of activists as trainers of mothers in the application of CSB, its nutritional value, general nutritional messages and benefit of de-worming and vitamin A; distribution of CSB on a monthly basis to beneficiaries selected in census; distribution of vitamin A and de-worming tablets by MoH personnel to children below 5 years of age; participatory training for better care and hygiene at community level; referral of children with severe malnutrition through assessments conducted during distributions; and, monitoring of distribution and follow up on referrals.
Component B) Water Provision and Hygiene and Sanitation Education - Objective:Prevent the risk of diarrhea in under five children in project-targeted areas.Strategies: Assessment of latrine coverage water points and identification of areas with water points which became non operational in the last 12 months, and identification of villages with no water sources; identify strategic locations for water points in high priority localities (community, schools and/or health units); strengthening existing community organization in managing water points; developing mechanisms with communities and local water authorities to maintain water point operational and supplying in time spare parts; support community in accessing spare parts; identify different type of water related diseases affecting children and community members, in particular cases of diarrhea; and,build awareness of adequate hygiene practices.Activities include: mapping of all water points and latrine coverage during baseline survey; provide safe water to approximately 3,500 households (including schools and health units); establish maintenance and repair groups; identify private partners for provision of spare parts at village level and establishing spare part network; establish “Water and Sanitation working Groups” at school level, involving teachers and students, to learn about best practices of water use, transportation and conservation at household level; training village activities in hygiene promotion; disseminate hygiene message through health center, water points and churches levels.Key Performance Indicators:
