| CARE implements the Consortium for Southern Africa Food Security Emergency Project (C-SAFE) in partnership with Catholic Relief Service and World Vision. The project is a coordinated development relief program in Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe that assists households and communities to strengthen their resilience to current and future food security shocks that affect their well-being and livelihoods. CARE leads C-SAFE activities in Malawi, where the consortium consists of nine NGOs (national and international) operating throughout the country. CARE operates in Lilongwe and Dowa districts. C-SAFE in Malawi includes interventions appropriate to the local context, including food distribution, supplementary feeding, community-based systems, nutrition education, food-for-work, promotion of approved crop varieties, crop diversification, promotion of marketing and associations, seed multiplication, income generating training, creating grain banks, establishing community surveillance systems, building new infrastructure and disaster mitigation/early warning. The objectives are to improve and maintain health and nutritional status of vulnerable communities and to increase productive assets among and households. |
