Project Name:Shelter Rehabilitation Project in R.A.A.N and R.A.A.S.
Project Description:
In response to the constant threat of hurricanes, CARE seeks to provide sustainable shelters for the most vulnerable individuals-women, children and the elderly-in communities that face the greates risks and that lack even the most basic resources necessary to respond to catastrophic events. Additionally, the project will target communities that were not included in Nicaragua's National Disaster Prevention System (SINAPRED), an emergency preparedness initiative developed by the national government. The project will involve both the construction and rehabilitation of seven shelters benefiting 4,100 people in the northern and southern Atlantic regions. Construction will take place in communities where current emergency shelters are in poor condition and do not comply with the safety standards established to protect the lives of those affected by flooding. CARE will build new shelters using cement blocks and reinforced contcrete, with zinc-sheet roofing over metallic framework, and reinforced concrete pedestals to support the floors. CARE selected these materials to ensure that the shelters will withstand future disasters. In Tasbapawnie, one of the most vulnerable communities, the local committee hopes to build a refuge center across a small lagoon some 800 meters from the community.
Rehabilitation will be provided for those structures-including churches, community centers and schools-that have been used to shelter populations during natural disasters. Rehabilitation will include the replacement of roofing, the reinforcement of walls, doors and windows and the repair of retaining walls.
