| The goal of this project is that by the year 2007 the incidence rate of smear-positive TB cases in Peru will be reduced from 88/100,000 inhabitants to 55/100,000 inhabitants, which will mean a decrease in the annual number of smear-positive TB cases from 22,500 to 15,400 cases in that year. The objectives of the project are: To promote and strengthen the participation and social organization of TBC sufferers as well as TBC-HRTAs in thepopulation; To reduce the incidence rate of smear-positive TB cases at 9 of the largest prisons nationwide; To extend DOTS Plus coverage improving the offer of drugs to patients witb TB MDR. The activities are focused mainly on TBC-HRTAs in 70 districts in Lima and Callao. These activities will connect actions of health promotion in communities and the recovery of sufferers including complementary help such as nutrition and adequate employment opportunities in order to avoid the strong economical dependence of these patients. Multidisciplinary teams of Health Regional Directions at national level will be supported in order to facilitate the application of protocols to patients with TBC MDR, also they will be encouraged to subscribe to the program. Another important area will be the prisons (Lurigancho, Piura, Trujillo, Callao, Huanuco, Castro Castro, Picsi, Socabaya and Ica) in which there are 54% of all inmates in the country. The following results shall be achieved: Mortality rate: Decrease from 4.3 to 2.1 per 100,000 people; Decrease from 3% to 1.5% in primary schemes failed; Increase from 60 % to 85% the suspected cases; Decrease from more than 285/100,000 to less than 100/100,000 in TB HRTAs; Decrease from 2,363/100,000 to less than 1,000/100,000 the incidence of TB in the prisons; Increase from 45% to 85% the coverage of patients TB MDR The direct beneficiaries will include 450 trained as educational promoters, 300 TBC suffers trained for employment or to create small businesses, 525 trained in health care quality, 249 INPE health staff trained in DOTS, DOTS Plus, HIV-TBC coinfection and infectious TB control, 11908 people confined in prison have acces to rapid HIV test, 971 patients receive standardized treatment, 1111 individualized treatment, 4352 health care workers trained in DOTS and DOTS Plus; 3500 inmates who have counseling sessions, 216 consultations nationwide. |
