| CARE is a Lead Agency, for the Consortium for Rehabilitation and Development (CORAD) to implement a three year Transition Assistance Program (TAP) in Koinadugu, Kono and Kailahun districts targeting extremely vulnerable and food insecure beneficiaries: 500 women-headed households, mothers women and children. The goal of the program is to support Sierra Leone' recovery from the war by focusing on restoring livelihoods for rural households in 30 chiefdoms in some of the most badly affected districts in the country. The program focuses on re-establishment of livelihoods and does so in ways that will facilitate a transition to development programs. The program has two objectives: 1) to improve health status and 2) to re-establish livelihood activities associated with agriculture. Nine (9) intermediate results are planned: 1) to improve access to health services; 2) to increase knowledge and skills related to improved health and nutrition practices; 3) to build village-level capacities to adress health issues and capitalize on opportunities to improve health status at the village level; 4) to link villagebased health groups to wider decision-making structures; 5) to restore productivity of inland valley lowland rice farms, tree farms and upland farms; 6) to rebuild storage and processing capacities; 7) to re-establish access to local markets; 8) to build village-level capacities to address agricultural problems and capitalize on agricultural opportunities; 9) to maintain a safety net Using proceeds from the monetization of 28,830 MT of wheat, rice and vegetable oil. Four (4) consortium members, CARE, CRS, World Vision and Africare, undertake activities that build capacities of groups and individuals at the village level. Further, more than 15,000 MT of bulgur, lentils and vegetable oil will be used in food-for-work, food-for-agriculture and distribution activities to assist these extremely vulnerable households as Food For Work (FFW) recipients as well as FFW beneficiaries from the building of field and farm infrastructure. | |
