The recent FSAU assessment's findings have indicated serious deterioration in the food security situation in Somalia and recommended an immediate emergency response. Consequently, CARE is proposing an additional emergency food intervention, beside its current USAID funded Rural Food Security Program (RFSP), to cover more vulnerable people in Central Somalia regions. The proposed emergency food intervention will build on the current RFSP, which aims at improving food security and preventing further depletion of assets of the most vulnerable households in Southern Somalia. While the RFSP is currently covering about 405,000 vulnerable people in Southern Somalia, FSAU assessment has identified an additional number of 133,000 vulnerable people in Galgadud and southern Mudug regions in Central Somalia, who are also experiencing severe food insecurity problems. As implementation strategy, CARE will continue to partner with 10-12 local NGOs who will take the lead in selecting beneficiaries and distributing the food rations. The additional emergency food will be programmed through Emergency Food Distribution (EFD). Based on the recent FASU assessment outcome and discussions with WFP, CARE will implement EFD in Gedo, Galgadud, and southern Mudug regions while EFFW interventions will continue under FRSP in Hiran, northern Middle Shabelle, Bay, and Bakool regions.
This project sets the framework for achieving the overall goal of WFP and CARE to support the food needs of the most vulnerable groups. It is intended to improve the food security of the pastoral communities in Galgaduud region. The project will target 133,000 benefiiaries. The goals of the project will achieved through a one month bi mnthly food ration of maize and oil distributed monthly to all the targeted beneficiaries in the region. The second goal will be achieved through capacity building of 10-12 LNGOs whom CARE will partner with in the targeted region of Galgaduud/Mudug. |
