Project Name:Improving Reproductive Health among Young Burmese Migrant Workers
Project Description:
Activities coverage
Although the project currently covers a large number of areas, these activities will be focused mainly on 5 areas: Talad Kung, Kilo-2, Sahakorn, Wat Khamphar, and Wat Samachi, which are all less than 9 km away from the main health clinic and have periodic community and mobile clinic visits. The total population of these three areas is approximately 6500 migrants, with approximately 3500 youth between 15-24 years of age.

The project goals are to improve the health of Burmese migrant workers in Muang District, Samut Sakorn Province, Thailand.

Specific objectives of additional activities
1. To increase the number of Burmese migrant workers between 15-24 years accessing contraceptive services and information through the peer educators or clinics.
2. To increase the number of sexually active youth Burmese migrant workers reporting some form of contraception using during their last sexual interaction.

Complementary Activities
1. Community meetings with parents and community leaders to discuss project ideas (introduce youth peer leaders) and initiate dialogue about the RH and lifeskills needs of youth in the community and to promote the health clinic and mobile clinic
2. 10 youth between 15-24 years of age will be trained to be peer educators focusing mainly on youth in the communities
a. Ten outstanding and motivated youth (5 males and 5 females) will be selected with the help of the older peer educators and community input
b. Three separate trainings on RH, family planning, STIs, HIV/AIDS, lifeskills, communication and counseling skills, anatomy/physiology, how to hold youth gatherings/discussions in the communities, etc. will be held for the peer educators
c. Responsibilities of the peer educators will include conducting the baseline and follow-up surveys, distributing condoms and IEC materials, holding informal youth gatherings in the communities once a month, providing accurate RH information to youth, referring youth to the clinics, and conducting community educational sessions.
d. The peer educators will be supervised by a peer supervisor who will take part in peer education also when appropriate.
3. Group health education series in the communities
a. The health educator and medical advisor will facilitate the peer supervisor and peer educators in developing a health education series in the communities consisting of 3 sessions on specific topics related to RH and life skills (anatomy/physiology, family planning, STIs, HIV/AIDS, etc.) depending on what the Burmese team deems appropriate based on input from migrant youth in the area.
b. The health educator and medical advisor will train the peer supervisor and peer educators to conduct these sessions and provide support.
c. Sessions will be advertised by word of mouth and through factories and be held in three different areas
4. Mini-grant for peer educators to develop two IEC materials suitable for single Burmese migrant youth focusing on RH issues (family planning, STIs, HIV/AIDS etc.) and lifeskills.
5. Training for project staff, including peer supervisors, on working with youth populations.
6. Cross visits with other RH youth projects in Thailand to share experiences, exchange information, visits other RH youth sites, and provide input on current projects.
7. Produce and publish a report based on the surveys and lessons learned to be shared with other organizations working with migrant youth populations.
