The project overall goal is focusing on improving the income and food security of the families of 34 villages of Pemba while the biodiversity and productive natural resources of Ngezi Forest and the Misali Island Marine Coservation Area are conserved. This will be achieved through successful implementation of savings and credit scheme; promotion of cultural and eco-tourism; improved community organizations and management of eco-tourism and tourist revenues; improved mechanisms for participatory research and monitoring of resources revenues. The project will use religious ethics to improve community conservation awareness and the experience of IUCN Tanga to facilitate the development of pilot Community Management System for “Home Fishing Grounds.
Misali as a Marine Conservation Area is characterised by unique marine and terrestrial ecosystems of remarkable species diversity. about 350 fish species and 40 genera of hard corals have been recorded. The 1 Km sq. of terrestrial area supports the endangered nesting turtles and the dense coastal thickets harbor populations of green monkeys, the endangered and endemic Pemba flying Fox, globally endangered coconut crabs and various species of birds. Economically Misali provides direct livelihood supports to 11,400 people through fishing at Misali. The project extends its operations to Ngezi Forest, Which is the largest of the few remnants of moist forest. Due to its high diversity, Ngezi forms part of the Eastern Arc and Coastal Forests of East Africa Centre of Endemism that is globally known as one of the world’s 25 most important biodiversity “hotspots†that warrants high conservation priority at the but also supports 10 agricultural communities with approximately 21,000 inhabitants. CARE with partner - DCCFF, will be strengthening the community organizations and their participation in management systems of Ngezi forest. |
