Botchwey is the director of Africa research and programs at Harvard University's Center for International Development. He was Ghana's minister of finance from 1982 to 1995. Botchwey taught at universities in Zambia, Tanzania and Ghana, and consulted for several international institutions, including the World Bank and the United Nations.

"Dr. Botchwey's extensive experience in the growth and development of Africa will lend an important perspective to CARE's board, and we are delighted that he is willing to work with us in achieving CARE's mission," said Glenn Hutchins, chairman of the nominating committee.

Richards is the chairman and CEO of the Southwire Company, one of the world's largest producers of electrical power cables and Georgia's third-largest private company. In 1999, Richards was elected Georgia's most respected CEO of the year by Georgia Trend magazine.

"We anticipate that, in addition to his contribution to CARE's governance, Mr. Richards will assist in representing CARE in the Atlanta community," said Hutchins. "It is a significant commitment of time that each board member makes, and we are very appreciative for the willingness and dedication shown by these two new members."

Both Botchwey and Richards will serve three-year terms on the 23-member board of directors. CARE's board of directors is the organization's governing body, elected by the members at an annual meeting. All members are responsible for gaining a basic understanding and initiating action in support of CARE's mission, goals and programs. This includes assisting in expanding CARE's outreach and increasing its visibility and donor support. All board members are volunteers and serve without compensation.

CARE is one of the world's largest private international relief and development organizations. CARE's experience, worldwide reach and efficiency offer lasting solutions to the problems of poor communities in developing countries.
