Amadou Bocoum, CARE’s Country Director in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), spoke with The Guardian on CARE’s response to the Ebola outbreak in the DRC. On May 17, the World Health Organization declared it a public health emergency of international concern, one that has resulted in over 900 suspected cases and roughly 170 suspected deaths.
CARE has been operating in the DRC since 1979, and has deep-rooted connections with communities and women-led organizations across the country. While aid cuts last year have hampered the Ebola emergency response, CARE continues to mobilize support for frontline health workers, equipping them with life-saving materials to protect themselves and care for patients.
