NEW YORK (September 07, 2004) - Joined by hundreds of cyclists, Susan Retik and Patti Quigley — who lost their husbands in the terrorist attacks in the United States on September 11, 2001 —will ride from Ground Zero in New York to the 9/11 Memorial in Boston to raise funds for Afghan widows.
Patti was eight months pregnant with her second child when her husband Patrick was killed; Susan was seven months pregnant with her third child when her husband David was killed.
Moved by the outpouring of support they received, they have turned their personal tragedy into a commitment to help the countless women widowed by war and terrorism around the world.
In 2003 they founded Beyond the 11th, a foundation with a mission to provide financial and emotional support to widows and their children in war-torn countries — with initial focus on Afghanistan.
Proceeds from the Beyond the 11th ride will be donated to CARE and Women for Women International — two organizations working to help women in Afghanistan improve their lives.
Patti and Susan will be available for interviews, as will women from CARE's war widows program in Afghanistan.
