CARE Thrilled by Introduction of Comprehensive Hunger Bill

Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA) and Rep. Jo Ann Emerson (R-MO) Adopt Hunger Roadmap

WASHINGTON, D.C. (June 11, 2009) - CARE, long a leader on the food security issue, is pleased to support important legislation that addresses global hunger. The Roadmap to End Global Hunger and Promote Food Security Act of 2009 (H.R. 2817) takes recommendations from ''The Roadmap to End Global Hunger.'' The Roadmap, authored by CARE along with a broad-based coalition of nongovernmental organizations, outlines a comprehensive policy framework and funding levels to alleviate global hunger.

''We applaud Representatives McGovern and Emerson for joining in the bi-partisan effort to ameliorate global hunger,'' said David Kauck, senior policy analyst for CARE. ''The bill calls on the U.S. to reduce global hunger, advance nutrition, increase food security and ensure that federal programs are flexible and respond effectively to both emergency needs and longer-term agricultural development and food security,'' said Kauck.

Global food security has received increased attention in recent months both in the Obama administration and Congress, with a provision of global food security included in the Foreign Relations Reauthorization Act passed by the House yesterday.

CARE looks forward to working with Representatives McGovern and Emerson, as well as fellow members of the Congressional Hunger Caucus and all members of the House, to advance this important bipartisan legislation. We call on all Americans to support the bill and to encourage their members of Congress to become cosponsors.
