CARE will be providing schools with new computer carts equipped with Intel Classmate PC computers. Each cart includes 25 PCs and is ideally suited for rural school environments because they provide mobility and a centralized power source.
The increased access to computers promises to enhance students' reasoning and analytical skills and support extracurricular activities such as developing social networks online. The ease of access to the internet and computer training will offer a safe environment for girls to connect with each other, learn to engage in civic action projects, expand their social networks and increase their leadership skills.
CARE's work with Intel and Global Giving is a natural extension of CARE's work to improve access, quality and relevance of elementary education in Egypt. As in other countries, education has long been recognized as a critical factor in enabling people, especially girls, to be healthier, more economically productive and politically active citizens.
Intel Corporation also believes that all students around the world deserve an opportunity to become the innovators of tomorrow. As part of its efforts to promote quality basic education for all, Intel worked with Global Giving to launch the Technology for Education Fund in March 2009. The fund provided CARE with an initial $45,000 grant. A total of $100,000 is needed to achieve program goals. In addition to the initial investment, Intel will match the first $15,000 additional donations to the Technology for Education Fund dollar for dollar at www.globalgiving.com/techforeducation. Donations must be received by December 31, 2009.
