A year of war in Ukraine: Masha’s story
Last February, Masha, her parents, and her older sister became a small portion of what would become the nearly 6.5 million people internally displaced since the start of the war in Ukraine. The family began a four-day journey from their hometown in the Donbas region to the train station in Lviv, where they hoped they’d be able to travel to safety somewhere further from the fighting.

Looking like a cross between harp and guitar, the bandura is an instrument steeped in Ukrainian history and culture. Thousands of girls like Sufaira live in the Rohingya refugee camps of Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. The camps are not a healthy place for girls to grow up, which is why CARE Bangladesh runs 12 Women and Girls Safe Spaces (WGSS), locally known as the “Shantikhana,” (literally: “place of peace”) across eight camps, the largest temporary home of refugees in the world.

Ukraine: What would you bring if you had to flee in a hurry?
More than 13 million people have left their homes since the escalation of the war on February 24. Half of these are seeking refuge in Western Ukraine. Most have left everything behind and were only able to take a few essential items with them. Some thought they would be able to return home soon. Here are a few people sharing what they were able to bring with them while fleeing from their homes.

As Ukrainian refugees arrive and find themselves in a completely new place, they can find foreign health and legal systems and hard to navigate. In Poland, CARE has partnered with local organizations primarily specializing in helping women with their specific needs.

Ghena and Hanan currently have to spend the equivalent of 11 euros to buy three liters of cooking oil -- three euros more than six weeks ago. The effects of the war in Ukraine have now also reached Jordan. This means only one thing after more than two years of the COVID-19 pandemic: further fear for their income.
