The promise of education is more than just reading and arithmetic. When fully realized, that promise includes learning how to get along with others, coping with setbacks, and discovering strengths. Quality schools are incubators for healthy societies around the world.
Consider, then, that a conservative estimate shows 75 million children who should be in primary school are not, and at least 55 percent of those – nearly 41 million children – are girls.
“When education is distributed unequally in a society, economic growth almost never occurs and human talent is wasted – that is, a poor country's most valuable asset remains unproductive.”
– Director, David M. Kennedy Center of International Studies, Brigham Young University
Girls need our attention because they face a systematic denial of their right to education, and the repercussions could not be more serious. In addition to the loss of opportunity for each individual child, denying education to girls corresponds to lower family incomes, higher maternal and child mortality, and a critical lack of participation and leadership from half the population.
In India, CARE has an innovative program to help girls who missed out on education early on. They not only master skills – they find their voices and prepare to become leaders in their communities and nation. Get a glimpse inside this extraordinary school with "Learning to Lead," a documentary by photographer and filmmaker Phil Borges. |
