Who cares about recovery? People like Hiba do — resilient, determined, and full of hope.
Hiba, 30, ran a small dairy and cheese farm outside Idlib, northwestern Syria. Since 2020, her work has provided modest income for herself and her four children. As a single mother, she often struggled with business losses she couldn't explain, but she kept going. Then, in February 2023, devastating earthquakes struck.

"If I return, how will I live? There are no schools, hospitals, or health centers. There are no jobs. If I go back, what will I return to? A home with no walls?" says Salwa, a displaced mother struggling to rebuild her life in Syria.

Syria: The things they went back for
A mortar and pestle. A ring. A notebook. A colored pencil. A baseball. Coffee cups. Clothes their daughter would have worn, had she lived. The earthquakes hit Turkiye and Syria on February 6, and these are just a few of the things Ammar, Qasem, Amira, Shams, and Mohammed rescued from the rubble in the days afterward.
