On Friday, September 10, join the humanitarian organization CARE and Michael Franti to kick off this year's Power to the Peaceful Festival weekend with the second annual Global Action Forum and Celebration at the legendary Fillmore Theatre in San Francisco. The next day, more than 50,000 people will gather in Golden Gate Park's Speedway Meadow for a day of yoga, music art and more.
Power to the Peaceful was founded by singer, activist and CARE Ambassador Michael Franti, and is dedicated to the promotion of cultural coexistence, non-violence and environmental sustainability through the arts and music.
The Global Action Forum & Celebration will feature the screening of two short films, one about Michael Franti's recent trip to visit CARE programs in East Timor, and the second an excerpt from the documentary "A Powerful Noise," depicting a girls' education crusader from Mali who beat seemingly insurmountable odds to stand up for the rights of powerless girls in her community. The films will be followed by a discussion with Lauren Hendricks, executive director of CARE's Access Africa initiative and Sarah Bouchie, director of CARE's basic & girls' education unit. The discussion will be moderated by Cheryl Jennings, co-anchor of the ABC 7 News in San Francisco.
The Forum will close with a reception and celebration featuring an acoustic concert by Michael Franti as he performs from his new album "The Sound of Sunshine."
CARE provides those interested in becoming involved in the fight against global poverty with several opportunities to take action and raise their voices in solidarity with the poor around the world.
