The Economist: 'An American icon of generosity'

May 11, 2026

Eight decades after the first CARE PACKAGE boxes were delivered to internally displaced people and refugees across Europe, Michelle Nunn, CARE’s President and CEO explains to readers of The Economist how small acts of kindness can still save lives and let people in crisis know they are not forgotten and abandoned.

Below are a few quotes from the article:

“Eighty years ago, Americans showed what is possible when we lead with compassion. As I reflect on the 80th anniversary of the CARE PACKAGE, I am struck by how urgently we need a renewal of that same spirit of generosity and connection. The enduring lesson of the original CARE PACKAGE is that, even at times of great challenge, small acts of kindness and compassion can save lives and fuel meaningful progress.”

“The enormity of the world’s crises can feel overwhelming, and the daily headlines belie the fact that poverty and child mortality have halved over the past few decades. We need to reconnect people with the vital work of aid and the meaningful solutions it brings.”
