CARE statement by Mirana Fanomezantsoa, CARE Madagascar Country Director
“Severe Tropical Storm Fytia made landfall along Madagascar’s west coast, bringing strong winds, heavy rainfall, and a high risk of flooding and landslides. Rural and urban communities in Boeny, Melaky, Betsiboka, Bongolava, Itasy, Analamanga, Alaotra Mangoro, and Atsinanana regions are expected to be affected, with damage to homes, infrastructure, and livelihoods likely.
Women, children, older people, and persons with disabilities are among the most vulnerable during cyclones, particularly in communities already affected by food insecurity and repeated climate shocks. CARE in Madagascar is closely monitoring the situation in coordination with national authorities, and humanitarian partners.
CARE is preparing a response in the Boeny region, one of the areas expected to be most severely affected, pending final emergency funding approval. Support from the Start Ready Fund will enable rapid preparedness and action to protect lives and livelihoods in the critical hours ahead.”
