CARE statement on recent violence in the Catatumbo region in northeast Colombia

January 22, 2025CARE expresses its deepest solidarity to the people of the Catatumbo region in northeast Colombia where the civilian population has recently been impacted by clashes between non-state armed groups. More than 80 people have been killed to date as a result of this violence, and more than 33,200 have been displaced.

As a humanitarian organization working in this region, CARE urgently calls for an immediate cessation of violence. And the response to this tragedy must take into account the specific protection needs of women and children, who are disproportionately impacted by conflict.

CARE teams, alongside local partners, are currently on the ground in Cucuta, assessing the needs and, by the end of this week, will be providing financial assistance, health services, and psychosocial support to the displaced families. In the coming days and weeks, we will expect to scale up our response to Ocaña, where violent clashes are still taking place.
