October 9, 2025 – After two years of devastating and tragic news out of the Middle East, today starts off with the promise of an end to the violence, the reunification of the hostages with their loved ones, and the resumption of desperately needed and lifesaving aid into Gaza. The agreement, advanced and announced by President Trump and brokered with leadership from Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey, is an enormous relief. Let us recognize and acknowledge the peacemakers after two years of brutal and bitter loss.
There is no way to restore the lives lost and there will be no end to the grief but let us rapidly quickly move to ensure that no one else loses their lives unnecessarily in the coming days. This means that there should be an immediate, unhindered surge of aid supplies and humanitarian assistance. Desperate hunger and displacement are the reality for virtually all Palestinians living in Gaza. Let us move now to alleviate their suffering.
CARE and our Palestinian partners are ready to scale up our humanitarian responses in Gaza – to increase the delivery of lifesaving healthcare at our clinic in Deir Al-Balah and through partner-run medical centers. We stand ready to immediately deliver support to 300,000 additional individuals with a focus on providing water, sanitation, food, healthcare, medications, shelter, and cash assistance.
May this agreement provide not only respite and relief in the short-term but create the pathway to a just, dignified, and long-term peace. Today, I am holding close the CARE team members and our partners in Gaza who have heroically endured enormous suffering while continuing to extend themselves to provide life-saving assistance to their fellow Palestinians. May the remaining hostages and their families find solace in their reunification. May Gazans experience not only an end of violence but the active solidarity of the world to help them heal and rebuild in the days, months, and years to come.
