‘Psychological first aid’: Training mental-health first-responders in the Ukraine refugee crisis
Florian Koleci, a psychiatrist with training in cognitive behavioral therapy and art therapy, is among 500 psychiatrists, social workers, healthcare workers on the Romania-Ukraine border and in transit hubs who recently received emergency psychosocial support and trauma-counseling training.

More than four million Ukrainian refugees, mostly women, children, and the elderly, have fled the country since the Feb. 24 Russian invasion. That number includes Oleksandra, 81, her daughter Elena, 53, and granddaughter Vika, 22, who recently arrived in Romania from their homes in Kyiv and Chernivtsi.

Women-centered design acknowledges that women’s needs and the barriers they face are fundamentally different to men. Barriers might include laws and political systems that disadvantage women, harmful social norms, and limited access to finance due to no credit history or collateral, male guarantor requirements, or restrictions on land ownership.

Empathy in the Ukraine refugee crisis: “We know what it means to be separated from your family”
Andreeas Novacovici, a social worker and president of the YouHub Association in Romania, is partnering with CARE to respond to the Ukraine crisis. YouHub is a member of the Federation of Child Protection NGOs (FONPC), and is one of 80 members of this federation who stepped up when conflict broke out to respond to those fleeing into Romania, as well as those in need still inside Ukraine.

More than 3.6 million Ukrainians have fled war, including Nadya, who turned 16 last week. Her family fled their home in Mykolaiv, Ukraine and crossed the border into Romania on her birthday. CARE’s partner provided Nadya’s family with diapers for her baby brother Vova, and helped move their belongings to the car of a friend – who will drive them to Bulgaria while they plan their next steps.

CARE created social ads featuring personal stories from a series of women who had been impacted by COVID-19 and were initially vaccine hesitant. The series ran in November, ahead of Thanksgiving and other holiday travel when we knew our target audience would be planning to gather with their families.
