CARE International is a global confederation of 16 member organizations – Austria, Australia, Canada, Denmark, Egypt, France, Germany, India, Japan, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Peru, Thailand, United Kingdom, and United States – working together to end poverty.
CARE was founded in 1945, when 22 American organizations came together to rush lifesaving CARE Packages® to survivors of World War II. Thousands of Americans, including President Harry S. Truman, contributed to the effort. On May 11, 1946, the first 15,000 packages reached the battered port of Le Havre, France. By the time CARE phased out the program two decades later, more than 100 million CARE Packages reached people in need, first in Europe and later in Asia and other parts of the developing world.
On November 4, 1983, CARE France was created. In 2003, CARE France began to help abandoned children in Romania through our merger with BE (Solidarity Romanians Abandoned Children) association. For more than 30 years, CARE France has fought against poverty by promoting respect for the basic rights of vulnerable populations and carrying out projects related to health, food security, education, access to water, economic development and disaster risk and preparedness.
