Second flash flood in six weeks hits new communities in Nepal

October 12, 2026

Statement by Nilkantha Pandey, Director for Program Development and Delivery for CARE Nepal

Oct. 11, 2026, Kathmandu: A flash flood has caused major damage in Nepal’s Gorkha District. It struck when a river blocked by a landslide burst through. Early reports say more than 35 homes and six bridges have been destroyed. Several communities are now cut off from essential services. At least 10 people are missing. Around 125–150 people are directly affected. Thousands more downstream are on alert, as the flood risk remains high.

Women and girls are likely to be hit hardest. Many will lose their homes and income. They will have less access to safe water and toilets. They will also face greater risks to their safety as families try to recover.

CARE Nepal is closely monitoring the situation. It is working with the government, local partners, and other aid groups as assessments continue. CARE Nepal is ready to support the emergency response if more help is needed.

“This flood comes just six weeks after the devastating August floods. Floods, landslides and other climate disasters have struck Nepal repeatedly in recent years, putting lives and livelihoods at risk. Climate change is not a distant threat. It is happening now and we must help communities prepare for future disasters. Women and girls must remain a priority in every response. CARE Nepal stands ready to support the government-led response, with our CARE PACKAGE® for Emergencies ready for deployment in coordination with the government and local partners, based on confirmed needs and access,” shared Nilkantha Pandey, Director for Program Development and Delivery for CARE Nepal.
