How Breakdancing is Helping This Young Woman in Uganda Feel More Confident

The Breakdance Project Uganda uses hip-hop to teach leadership skills and social responsibility to young people like Sharon.

Sharon lives in a small one-room house with her father in Uganda. Life is difficult for them right now. Her father doesn’t have a job and struggles to provide food for the family. Sometimes Sharon goes to school without eating.

Every Monday and Wednesday, though, Sharon visits the Breakdance Project Uganda for breakdance classes.

Founded in 2006, the Breakdance Project Uganda uses hip-hop to teach leadership skills and social responsibility to young people like Sharon.

Girls voices are important because we are equal.

Sharon

“When I dance, I feel relaxed, I feel happy,” she says.

Learning to breakdance has helped Sharon feel more confident.

“I feel proud of myself. I feel like a leader,” she says. “Girls voices are important because we are equal.”

She has dreams of becoming a designer. Her dad would like to see her become an engineer.

“I think I’ll be both,” she says.
