NPR’s 1A Speak Freely show, hosted by journalist Jennifer White, dedicated an entire segment to humanitarian crises that are under the news media radar. CARE’s Chief Humanitarian Officer, Deepmala Mahla, joins other humanitarians to discuss one of these crises: Haiti. Deepmala talks about widespread armed violence and large-scale displacement across the country, acute malnutrition, and the impact of the crisis on women and girls. When it comes to funding shortfalls, Deepmala points out that the Haitian humanitarian response plan has received less than 9 percent of the $908 million required to respond to the most pressing humanitarian needs.
