April 15, 2026

With more than 14 million people internally displaced and at least 400,000 deaths, Sudan is one of the largest humanitarian crisis in the world. As Sudan entered its fourth year of war, CARE’s Mohammed Tijani spoke to NPR about the plight of displaced people in Darfur. Women and girls are especially impacted by this prolonged emergency and experience unimaginable suffering.

Below is a quote from Tijani.

“It was the first time for me to truly understand what it means to be humiliated and broken and powerless. A woman told me that she buried two of her children to hunger.”
