CARE responds to flooding in Nepal— and helps
prevent future crises

Flash floods in Nepal have become steadily worse in recent years due to soil erosion. Floodwaters frequently sweep away crops, drown livestock, and destroy homes, schools and roads. Drinking water is contaminated, and standing pools are prime breeding ground for insects carrying deadly diseases like malaria.

After recent flooding, CARE distributed 2.5 tons of food in Nepal as part of a continuing humanitarian response, and has also provided funds for medicine to contain the spread of disease. Just as important as this immediate aid is CARE’s long term strategy in Nepal. CARE works with communities to understand and prevent the underlying causes of flash floods by planting trees and implementing farming methods that preserve forests. Finding long-term solutions to recurring crises is crucial to helping villages in Nepal establish stable, self-sufficient communities.
