More than 600,000 Left Homeless in Wake of Fighting in Sierra Leone
CARE is feeding 250,000 refugees in Guinea
More than 600,000 refugees from Sierra Leone are fleeing from the fighting between RUF rebels and ECOMOG and seeking a safe haven near the village of Gueckedou, Guinea.
CARE is registering the refugees for distribution of food and clothing. CARE also is distributing food directly to 250,000 people in 60 separate camps. The camps are located in a thick rainforests.
CARE began its operation in Guinea in November 1998, when the United Nations High Commission on Refugees (UNHCR) asked CARE to manage food distribution near Gueckedou. This is 14-month project is CARE's first operation in Guinea.
