Day One dinner and celebration
First of all, let me say we've had some technical issues at the conference, so my apologies if these blog entries have misspellings or omitted words... so here goes again.
Michael Franti was such a JOY to watch in the Atrium! For those of
you not familiar with his work before Spearhead, you should really
check out the Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprysy. The song "Television" is
one of the most brilliant commentaries on modern society of the last
quarter-century (and it could be esaily updated to "internet" if the
syllable tumbled off the tongue in the same way). Franti's enthusiasm
for CARE was evident -- and he was feeling the love from a row of
dancing ladies in front of the stage.
I want to make sure to give credit to Christina Santos and Michelle
Rathbun again for putting on such a seamless and enjoyable program.
Step Afrika was fantastic. The best part of the evening event, though,
was watching the award recipients -- and, of course, Dr. Gayle's
infamous "Top Ten" list about Richard Gere!
