side_glasserClimate change is worsening the plight of those hundreds of millions of men, women and children who already live in extreme poverty - and it threatens to push hundreds of millions more people into similar destitution. A concerted international response to this unprecedented challenge is required if we are to avoid catastrophic human suffering.

Partnerships

CARE and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) are excited to announce a new joint effort to combat climate change and its effects on the worlds poor. CARE and WWF believe that, ultimately, conservation is about people and the balance that must be struck between humans and nature. And, if we are to be successful in our goals, we must work with an eye towards the developing world. For it is in the developing spaces that the needs of nature and the needs of the poor are closely linked together. But, together, we will find the means to prosperity.

We know that we cannot choose between protecting the wild beauty of a tropical jungle or the diversity of a coral reef and allaying the hunger of a malnourished child. Instead, we must explore the connection between poverty and the environment. After all, we share one Earth.

To avoid the pitfalls of past development projects, we must alter development as we know it that so often degrades the environment without improving the situation of the world's poorest people. We must strengthen the voices of poor people in discussions about the future of resources upon which their lives — and all of ours — depend. We must help provide forums in which citizens can engage their government officials on proper stewardship of natural resources. Finally, we must craft creative solutions that fairly balance the costs and benefits of conservation with the needs of nature, while helping communities adapt to an ever more uncertain climate.
