MEDIA ALERT

CARE, a leading global poverty-fighting organization, issues the following statement in anticipation of proposed changes to U.S. food assistance programs expected to be included in the President’s Fiscal Year 2014 budget submissions to Congress:

CARE has long called for the United States to reduce its reliance on the inefficient and at times market-distorting practice of monetizing U.S. commodities to fund development programs. During this time of significant fiscal challenges, we should do all we can to ensure that our limited tax dollars are spent efficiently and effectively to reach as many of the more than 900 million people worldwide suffering from chronic hunger as possible. CARE stands ready to work with the Obama Administration and Congress to reform our international food aid system, reform that is long overdue and critically needed in an era of decreasing budgets and chronic global hunger.

CARE food policy experts are available for further comment.
