ATLANTA, GA. SEPTEMBER 18, 2023—At the 2023 Concordia Annual Summit, CARE USA President and CEO Michelle Nunn will lead a discussion examining how some of the world’s leading companies are addressing gendered challenges to global supply chains.
The September 19th Concordia event – Women in Supply Chains: Addressing Gendered Risks for Women and Businesses – will feature Nunn alongside panelists Michelle Grogg, vice president of corporate responsibility at Cargill; Amber Johnson, global vice president – cocoa for Mars; and Alicia Vermaele, executive director, The Starbucks Foundation, and director, Global Coffee, Social Impact and Sustainability, Starbucks.
The speakers, each of whom represents a CARE Women’s Economic Justice partner, will discuss the critical role that women play in supply chains, as well as the challenges that they face and how industry can address them.
“While women grow and make so much of the food and goods that we use every day, women are facing challenges that inhibit their potential. Every day, women in the workforce are facing harassment and violence, dangerous working conditions, lack of access to education and healthcare – as well as hunger and malnutrition. Women who grow so much food for the world often don’t have enough to eat themselves,” said Nunn.
She added: “All of the risks facing women can lead to decreased productivity, increased absenteeism, lower presenteeism, and higher turnover—not to mention reputational damage, legal and compliance risks. However, when gendered risks are addressed we find that negative effects are mitigated. And moreover, productivity and retention increase, as do long-term relationships with suppliers, and overall brand reputation.”
