The goal of the Water, Sanitation and School Hygiene Project, is to reduce child morbidity and mortality caused by water related disease in 4 schools located in six municipalities. The present project is a pilot phase and the targeted participants are 455 children from 4 primary schools will benefit from water and sanitation infrastructures, in six municipalities: San Isidro, Sebaco, Matagalpa, Jinotega, La Trinidad, and Esteli, as well as 13 teachers will gain new knowledge and teaching methodologies of water and sanitation management. The present project is a pilot phase that will have a duration of six months. If a second phase is approved, the Expansion Phase will have a duration of 14 months and will then be expanded to another 14 schools. Though the project will work autonomously, it will be coordinated by the PROGEDES team.
Some of the main activities include: eighteen integrated water and sanitation systems (W and S) built or rehabilitated, assuring quality standards and water resource continuity; 2) Eighteen school communities trained in water use and management and environmental sanitation; 3) Environmental campaign in management and protection of water resource executed at school level; 4) Methodology addressing water management, sanitation, and hygiene in schools validated and disseminated throughout Nicaragua. |
