Project Information

Project Name:The Health of the Child - USAID Child Survival Project
Project Description:
The project is operational in four chiefdoms in Koinadugu district and has a goal to improve the health status
of 48,630 children under five years and 51,491 women of reproductive age (15-49 years) through innovative
strategies that promote social cohesion and build partnerships between communities and government. In the long
run, the project plans 1) to include the expanded program of immunization, nutrition and malaria treatment and
prevention activities; and 2) introduce a maternal and newborn care component. The project uses voluntary
participation in community health clubs to strengthen family knowledge and decision-making skills related to the
health of women and children, to disseminate health information and to promote healthy practices. The participation and training of local health practitioners enhance communities' capacity to initiate, support and sustain health initiatives. The project works in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Sanitation.
