CARE 2023 Annual Report

The global crises we faced in 2023 left us with little time to catch our breath. Earthquakes, floods, cyclones, and droughts dominated the year, accentuated by the ongoing effects of climate change and the humanitarian toll of conflict. This year saw a record-high number refugees – more than 100 million – as ongoing conflict in Ukraine continues to devastate food systems worldwide. Through it all, CARE has been there, as we have been for 78 years: working hand-in-hand with communities to bring relief and hope, supporting women and girls because they are disproportionally poor and have the greatest leverage to defeat poverty.

Adolescent Mothers Against All Odds (AMAL)​ – Locally Developed, Globally Scaled​

The AMAL Initiative, locally developed and globally scaled, addresses the SRH needs of pregnant adolescents and first-time mothers in different crisis-hit countries. Launched in March 2020, it involves activities like the Young Mothers' Club to bridge the gap in SRH services and challenge gender norms, aiming to contribute to global discussions on adolescent responsive SRH and GBV programming.

Harmony in Crisis: Unveiling Lessons of the Humanitarian Partnership Platform in Philippine Disaster Management

On average, in humanitarian responses, 1.2% of funding goes to local organizations. In CARE’s work in the Philippines, 76% of the humanitarian funding goes to local partners. What led to this? Investments in networks, cultivation of trust, reduced paperwork, and commitment to swift action. Most importantly — accountability to partners and the people our programs serve.

For the eighth year in a row, CARE has produced a report on the 10 most under-reported humanitarian crises of 2023. For the second year in a row, all ten of the most under-reported crises are in Africa. From conflict in Angola to climate change in Zimbabwe, every entry in this report represents countless human tragedies taking place in the shadows of the world's gaze. In a world where news cycles are becoming more short-lived, it is more important than ever that we collectively remember that every crisis, whether forgotten or not, brings with it a human toll.

Solidarity in Saving: Listening to Women’s Needs During Crises

Women (in VSLAs) Respond is an ongoing exercise, conducted by CARE, listening to how women in Village Savings & Loan Associations (VSLAs) are affected by and responding to shocks and crises in their communities, including conflict, climate change, food insecurity, pandemics, and more. The best way to understand what is happening to crisis-affected populations is to listen to their voices and experiences. Between February and August 2023, CARE interviewed saving group members as part of the Women (in VSLA) Respond initiative. This brief represents quantitative data from Burundi, Colombia, Côte d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Mali, Niger, and Vietnam. The survey included 3,822 (85% women) VSLA members.

Fighting for Survival: Case Study, Burundi

November 18, 2023

In the Mutimbuzi commune of Burundi, on the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, 46-year-old Judith Nijimbere shares her story of struggle and resilience. Judith is married with eleven children and lives in a community that has faced multiple challenges, including flooding that has destroyed many houses. Judith battles to make ends meet through her small farming business. She is the Treasurer of her Village Savings & Loan Association (VSLA) and was one of its first members when it was established four years ago. Available in English and French.
