Why a Private Sector Playbook?

A woman smiles while leaning back on a desk. Behind her are a series of white wedding dresses and colorful outfits hanging on three tiers of racks.

The world has set a goal of achieving gender equality by 2030. At the current pace of progress, we are over 100 years away from achieving this.

Why now?

To achieve Sustainable Development Goal 5 (Gender Equality) by 2030, the private sector’s scale, resources, and influence are imperative. Urgent action from all stakeholders, including companies, is critical to move the world toward gender equality faster.

Achieving gender equality on a global scale requires many actors to make a concerted effort. In addition to others, the private sector plays an important role in eliminating gender gaps and empowering women. This is true both inside companies and in communities where companies work.

This playbook, using the nine targets set out by SDG5, will help companies and their employees understand what actions they can take to move toward gender equality. Some steps are small, and some are big. All require being willing to pause and ensure that no harm is done to the individuals gender equality benefits. The playbook is not exhaustive. And, of course, anyone who uses this playbook should first ensure alignment with corporate policy.
