Johan Mooij, CARE Yemen’s country director, was quoted in an NPR story about the staggering numbers of cholera cases in war-torn Yemen, in which the resulting devastation has turned it into one of the worst humanitarian crisis in the world.
The first cases of cholera were reported approximately eight months ago, but the cases have now surpassed 1 million, leaving over 2,200 people dead – almost a third of whom are children.
Mooij told NPR that “with treatment, the number of people who have died from the disease remains very low compared with those who have contracted it — which is cause for optimism.”
“But there’s one major condition: You need clean water (…) If there is no fuel coming into the country to make the water pumps work, then people will have to go back to filthy water again. That will make cholera increase again,” he added.
