#MyGivingStory invites CARE supporters to say what inspires them to give and to raise funds to support CARE’s work around the world

ATLANTA (Nov. 29, 2016) — Global poverty-fighting organization CARE will celebrate #GivingTuesday by participating in an online story-telling and fundraising opportunity called #MyGivingStory. A partnership between #GivingTuesday, Facebook, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, #MyGivingStory is a national campaign inviting people to share the story of why they give and also to create Facebook Fundraisers, which will raise funds to support participating nonprofit organizations, including CARE. Winning story submissions can generate up to $10,000 for their authors’ favorite nonprofit.

The call for story submissions began Nov. 17 and runs through Dec. 31. On the #MyGivingStory tab of #GivingTuesday’s Facebook page, story-tellers can post a short essay responding to the question, “What inspires you to give?” From the top 20 essays as “Liked” by Facebook users, judges will select six winners, which will be announced in January. Grants range from $2,500 to $10,000. Participants can share and promote their submissions on social media using hashtags #MyGivingStory and #GivingTuesday.

Additionally, participants can visit facebook.com/nonprofit/fundraisers, where they can create a Facebook Fundraiser, then engage their Facebook network to raise money for their chosen nonprofit. Facebook is partnering with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and #GivingTuesday to contribute up to $1 million to Facebook Fundraisers. Donations to all fundraisers on Giving Tuesday will be matched by The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation up to $1,000 per fundraiser (for a total of $500,000 matched). Facebook will waive up to $500,000 in fees.

“We are thrilled that Facebook has selected CARE as one its nonprofit partners in the #MyGivingStory campaign,” said Michelle Nunn, president and CEO of CARE. “Our work around the world truly comes to life through the countless stories of people whose lives and communities are transformed through our work together, so it’s particularly fitting that CARE supporters would engage in their own story-telling through #MyGivingStory — and benefit  CARE at the same time.”

In its second year, #MyGivingStory is part of a larger #GivingTuesday, which falls on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving and has become a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration.
