CARE Urges All Parties to Refrain from Violence in Haiti

CARE Haiti Interim Country Director, Lora Wuennenberg released the following statement in the wake of the assassination of Haiti President, Jovenal Moise:

“We stand in solidarity with the people of Haiti during this difficult situation and urge all parties to refrain from violence during this difficult time. Haiti is already suffering from ongoing economic hardship and the global COVID-19 pandemic, and the country is now entering Hurricane seasons, which threatens to wreak even further havoc on already vulnerable populations. 4 million people are currently facing levels of high acute food insecurity, with almost 1 million just one step away from famine conditions.

CARE stands ready to work with our partners to meet ongoing humanitarian needs of vulnerable families and communities. We are especially worried about the impact further violence and displacement could have on women and girls in the country who are especially at risk of, and vulnerable to, gender-based violence.”
