ATLANTA (May 17, 2013) – CARE, one of the world’s largest poverty-fighting organizations, is proud to be sponsoring this year’s Women Deliver conference, advancing the goal of ensuring that the health and rights of girls and women remain at the forefront of global humanitarian and development agendas.
CARE believes that access to quality healthcare is both a fundamental human right and a critical development issue. It is essential to women being able to take their equal place in society.
While significant progress has been made in improving women and girls’ health and rights under the Millennium Development Goals, such progress has been uneven and inequities remain – often among the most vulnerable populations. Improving sexual, reproductive and maternal health and addressing the continuing disparity is central to CARE’s commitment to gender equality and the reduction of poverty and social injustice. A focus of CARE’s work is the belief that women’s empowerment, gender equality and human rights must be a core component of any development framework for women’s health going forward.
“CARE’s experience shows that the sexual and reproductive health and rights of girls and women cannot be achieved through the provision of health services alone,” said Dr. Helene D. Gayle, president and CEO of CARE. “Real change requires addressing underlying and systemic factors, including the pervasive gender inequality that undermines the health and well-being of women and girls throughout their lives.”
CARE’s experts from around the world will attend the conference, and participate in panel discussions highlighting CARE programs that have achieved substantial results not only in the improvement of women and girls’ health but also in advancing their rights and empowerment.
CARE invites all those attending Women Deliver, taking place in Kuala Lumpur on May 28-30, to visit our booth and attend CARE’s panels to learn more about our gender empowerment, rights based, and sexual, reproductive and maternal health work.
