Millions of girls are out of school in the developing world. Violence, hunger, child marriage, or simply the belief that girls aren’t worth teaching are barriers that keep them from getting an education.

CARE is helping communities and girls break down these barriers, and we are partnering with the Alba Botanica®, Avalon Organics® and JĀSÖN® brands to do it.

Together we are unlocking girls potential, advocating for their rights, and standing with mothers and communities to help shape brighter futures.

To highlight our commitment, we began the Qach’Umilal program in the Western Highlands of Guatemala.  Qach'Umilal (or, Guiding Star in the indigenous language of K’iche) Girls Education and Leadership program supports 150 primary school girls, ages 9-15.  These girls, from the K'iche' ethnic group, live in remote and poor rural areas of the municipality and face serious challenges. Enter Qach’Umilal: a program strengthens girls' leadership skills and capacities, and promotes girls' access to school, while also encouraging them to stay in school and continue to study.

The program also focuses on building girls’ self-esteem, and beginning the sometimes difficult discussions around sex and sexuality. Qach’Umilal also takes the unique approach of engaging the girls’ parents, offering classes to raise awareness around the importance of education of educating girls. Through these classes, CARE is able to create a true partnership with the girls and then families to create lasting change.

CARE knows that a girl who is a leader is an individual who actively learns and believes that she can make a difference in the world she lives in.

The girls in Qach’Umilal are learning to make a difference. Our belief is that with a little help, these girls will find their way to a brighter future.
