Family Planning Conference
Investing for a Lifetime of Returns
Every other year since 2009, the International Conference on Family Planning (ICFP) has brought together researchers, practitioners, advocates, and government leaders and policymakers to share best practices, celebrate successes, and to continue working toward the goals set at the 2012 London Summit on Family Planning. ICFP also serves as an international platform from which countries, organizations, and individuals can make public commitments to family planning and can be recognized for their achievements. This year’s conference theme is “investing for a lifetime of returns”.
The London Summit on Family Planning resulted in historic political, programmatic, and financial commitments to reduce the high unmet need for family planning. CARE committed to being part of the global movement to reach an additional 120 million women and girls with family planning information and services by 2020, recognizing that many with the greatest unmet need for family planning reside in hard-to-reach areas affected by crisis, conflict, or natural disasters. Another Family Planning Summit was held in 2017, aiming to check on and build on the progress made in many countries since 2012. ICFP will bring many of these same actors together again, initiating the final push to achieving the ambitious Family Planning 2020 goals.
CARE’s senior director of sexual and reproductive health and rights, Julio Pacca, believes the conference is a key opportunity to exercise cross-sector and cross-border cooperation in pursuit of a global goal. “It is always great to have the chance to meet and strategize with our family planning colleagues around the world, but the timing of this year’s ICFP is especially important as we are so close to 2020. We welcome the opportunity to celebrate accomplishments, share lessons learned, and commit once again to the work that remains to be done.”
